Animalia & BlackAFinStem are offering this special, limited edition long-sleeve tee to create more awareness and support for Black contributions to conservation and the natural sciences by celebrating Black Birding.

The BlackAFinSTEM Collective is a group of Black science professionals that seeks to support, uplift, and amplify Black STEM professionals in natural resources and the environment through professional development, career connection, and community engagement. BlackAFinStem was the organization behind #BlackBirdersWeek, started in response to the Christian Cooper incident in Central Park. 
65% of Profits from this purchase go to BlackAFinStem and will be used to finance Adventure Packs they are providing to members of the Black community to encourage outdoor exploration and adventure.

Each shirt is naturally hand dyed with indigo to create one of a kind result.  The blue we chose is in honor of the Woodhouse Scrub Jay, a bird selected by our artist Chelsea, and much like in the natural world the exact shade of blue can vary slightly Jay to Jay, so too do our tees because they were dyed in this all-natural way.

The indigo process in incredible unique and has very deep historical and cultural roots across the globe. The type of indigo used is Indigofera Tinctoria which is one of the most commonly cultivated species of indigo. The shirts range in color depending on length of time in indigo vat as well as time given for the indigo molecule to fully oxidize (which binds the indigo to the fiber). This process is 100% sustainable and all waste water was neutralized and given back to the earth.

Care Instructions:

  • Hand wash if possible and hang to dry out of direct sunlight.
    Machine wash on low setting with pH neutral (organic) soap.
  • As this is a naturally dyed product using pigments from the earth, fading is possible.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight.
